Cedar Hill ISD reports 10 buses need retrofitting to meet Texas's seat-belt mandate; estimated cost $398,060

A district presenter briefed trustees on compliance with Senate Bill 546 (89th Legislature), which requires all Texas school buses to have three-point seat belts by Sept. 1, 2029. The presenter said the district's 66 buses in service include models used for general routes and special-ability transport, and identified 10 buses (two with lap belts and eight with no belts) that would require retrofitting at an estimated $39,860 per bus, totaling $398,060.
The presenter said the district purchased 10 additional buses with the 2024 bond; those buses will be in service Aug. 12. Staff said they will submit the required fleet and cost report to the state following the public meeting and monitor possible state funding to offset retrofit costs.
