KUSD reports progress on K-5 structured literacy under Act 20; 525 elementary teachers completed Cox Campus training

KUSD's elementary ELA team reported continuing implementation of structured literacy in K26ndash;5 as part of compliance with Wisconsin Act 20 and district improvement goals. The presentation highlighted professional development, assessment, personal reading plans, and formative assessment work.

The ELA team reported that "100 percent of our elementary teaching staff completed and passed the Cox Campus professional learning module. That's 525 certificates earned," a milestone administrators said creates a common foundation for phonics instruction across schools. The district uses AIMSwebPlus as the statewide reading screener and adopted NextPath to manage personal reading plans and streamline family-facing reports (about 7,000 student logins to Xello were also cited). Administrators explained personal reading plans are initiated when a student scores below the 25th percentile on the screener; KUSD opted to set an exit target closer to the 40th percentile because data suggests that level better aligns with readiness.

The ELA team also summarized implementation supports: district learning walks across more than 140 elementary primary classrooms, development of common formative assessments (phonics and comprehension), and plans to extend learning walks into grades 2 and 3. Administrators noted the grade 3 promotion policy takes effect this year and that kindergarten data is under review to identify curriculum gaps.

Board members asked about family communication and supports for students in special education; staff said home components of personal reading plans, parent-friendly NextPath reports, and coordination with student support services are in place.
