Jail population, DESCOM director search and county fair noted at supervisors meeting

County staff briefed supervisors on July 28 that the jail population was 105 adults with 29 being housed out of county and that several transfers to a halfway house and to Mitchellville are planned. Staff characterized jail population and bed pressures as ongoing and said they are monitoring placements.
Staff also announced the Des Moines County Fair is underway with animals arriving and encouraged public attendance through Aug. 2. In personnel news, the county has posted the executive director position for DESCOM; an interim director has been named, applications are due Aug. 7, and the advisory board will interview and make a recommendation expected by mid‑August.
Staff encouraged attendance at National Night Out on Aug. 4 (6–8 p.m.), and said a proclamation will appear on an upcoming agenda. These items were presented as routine department updates and community announcements.
