Vernonia SD 47J board sworn in; Greg Kent elected chair, Joni named vice chair

The Vernonia SD 47J board opened its meeting with the swearing-in of five new directors, each taking the oath to support the U.S. and Oregon constitutions and district policies. After procedural items, the board moved to leadership elections and voted by voice to elect Greg Kent as board chair and Joni as vice chair.
The board immediately reorganized committee assignments for the 2025–26 school year. The body approved appointments to the negotiations team and scholarship committee and confirmed a calendar of regular monthly business meetings with an onboarding work session scheduled for Aug. 14 at 4:30 p.m. The board chair noted the change of leadership and asked members to contact district staff with any questions about committee duties. "Congratulations, Greg. You are now the new board chair," the presiding official said after the vote.
