Council acknowledged receipt of Ward 1 councilmember Bill Smith's resignation effective May 31 and voted to accept it. Staff explained that, because election deadlines have passed, state statute requires filling the vacancy by appointment and recommended advertising two Fridays with submission deadlines and council interviews at a special meeting.
Council approved formalizing the appointment process, with staff to advertise, collect expressions of interest and schedule interviews (proposed July 6) so the council can appoint a replacement. Staff said if no applicants are received the recruitment effort will continue.
