Putnam County to accept $35,000 state ignition‑interlock grant for Probation

Putnam County’s Director of Probation, John Osterhout, told the Protective Services Committee on March 11 that the State offered an ignition‑interlock grant and he requested permission to accept $35,000 to support enforcement in the county. "There are currently 183 ignition interlock orders within the county, but only about a third install the devices in their cars," Osterhout said, and he described the program as similar to Stop DWI high‑visibility events.
Osterhout explained that every person convicted of a DWI in New York State is required to have an ignition interlock device installed and that device costs are paid by defendants; those who retain a license generally have 10 days to install the device. Chairman Regan moved to pre‑file the necessary resolutions to accept the grant; Legislator Montgomery seconded the motion and it passed by voice vote.
