Dell Rapids councilors spent much of the July 6 meeting weighing residents’ calls to limit tax increases and surcharges against requests from local organizations for 2027 funding. Several council members emphasized essential services, saying items like clean water, streets and emergency services should be prioritized; others argued economic development and quality-of-life investments also support long-term fiscal health.
Votes recorded at the meeting included approval of $100,000 for the ambulance service and $75,000 for the fire department. The council approved $15,000 for the Historic Preservation Museum (reduced from a $20,000 ask), $9,000 for the Senior Center and $3,000 for the cemetery; the Dell Rapids Baseball Association was approved for $20,000 with the association pledging $15,000 in match or in-kind contribution. The American Legion’s original $10,000 request failed on a 4–3 roll call; the council later approved a $6,000 alternative. The council tabled the Visit Dell Rapids tourism request and the Chamber’s $50,000 request pending financial documentation and further information about overlapping roles.
Councilors also discussed using downtown program funds (facade/loan pool concepts) and requested clearer proposals and financial breakdowns before making a final allocation. Finance staff said tabling some requests gives them direction for the August budget process and that the special budget meeting is scheduled for Aug. 10.
