Climbing coalition asks Dell Rapids to promote crags and help curb litter

Members of the Great Plains Climbing Coalition updated the Dell Rapids City Council on their work maintaining climbing routes and welcoming visitors to the city’s rock outcroppings.
“We advocate for access,” one presenter said, noting the group runs spring and fall cleanup events and performs route maintenance. The speakers said they had seen an increase in litter and evidence of campfires this season and asked the city to help keep the area clean and to promote the site’s recreational value. “We really appreciate everything that the city has done for us in the past, and we're hoping to continue our relationship with you,” a presenter said.
Councilors and presenters discussed patrols and mosquito/gnat season as limiting access. Presenters said they could add another 10–20 routes over time if funding and safety reviews allow; they emphasized that any new route work must ensure rock stability and safety. The presenters identified the climbing area as city land under an agreement with the coalition and encouraged the city to include the site in tourism or parks promotion materials.
