National Grid outlines phased cast-iron-main replacement on South Street; council refers petition to License & Franchise Committee

A National Grid representative described a Cast Iron Main replacement project on South Street, saying the company seeks a grant of location to replace about 1,800 feet of main and to perform separate work down Vernon Street.
Mary Mulroney, speaking for National Grid, told the council the work is part of the utility’s cast-iron-main replacement program and described the length and location of the proposed excavation. In response to councillors’ questions, she said the City asked National Grid to split the overall program into phases; Mulroney said this petition covers the first phase and additional phases will follow. "As part of the Cast Iron Main replacement program, National Grid would like to replace a section of Main on South Street, 1800 feet in total," she said.
There were no public speakers in favor or in opposition during the hearing. Councilors raised questions about project phasing, staging, traffic-management, coordination with schools and businesses, and public notification; Mulroney said those topics would be addressed as part of committee review. The council closed the hearing and referred the petition to the License & Franchise Committee for more detailed review.
