Staff reports Eagle Lake not party to Mankato–Mankato Township orderly annexation agreement; legal review underway

City Administrator Jennifer Bromeland provided an informational update on orderly annexation discussions with Mankato Township at the July 20 Planning Commission meeting. Bromeland said Mankato Township indicated it did not believe a separate agreement was necessary and instead referenced the existing orderly annexation agreement between the City of Mankato and Mankato Township.
Bromeland told the commission that staff has engaged legal counsel to review whether the existing agreement applies to Eagle Lake and the implications of Eagle Lake not being a party to that agreement. She reminded commissioners that orderly annexation proceedings are governed by Minnesota Statutes Chapter 414 and noted the update was provided because the commission has previously inquired about how orderly annexation agreements may relate to future growth and boundary considerations for the city. No action or recommendation from the Planning Commission was requested at the meeting.
