Board approves assistant principal hires and reclassifies elementary supervisor to director of humanities

The New Haven Board of Education approved the superintendent’s personnel recommendations, including two assistant principal appointments and a reclassification that will move an elementary supervisor position to a director of humanities to oversee elementary English language arts and social studies.

Superintendent Dr. Negron recognized retirees and presented Amy Schlank as the recommended assistant principal at Elm City Montessori and recommended Jennifer Kaye for assistant principal at King Robinson Magnet School. Dr. Negron said the director reclassification uses funds remaining from the prior salary and will not increase the standing budget. “We are actually saving money in that appointment because we have taken what existed… and adding the role that was executing those responsibilities,” Dr. Negron said.

Jennifer Kaye addressed the board, saying she was honored to accept the assistant principal position and pledged to “listen, learn, and lead alongside our staff, students, and families.” Board member Dr. Joiner praised the superintendent’s analysis and said the appointments were “well thought out” and intended to improve operational efficiencies while supporting teaching and learning.

Dr. Joiner recused himself from one portion of the vote related to a math supervisor because a family member holds that position; the board accommodated the recusal by separating motions so Joiner could vote on the remainder of the personnel report. The personnel report motion was moved, seconded and carried by recorded roll call votes.
