Bond County approves intergovernmental WiFi tower agreement with Greenville

Bond County commissioners on March 18 approved an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Greenville to place and operate a WiFi tower on and around the Courthouse to improve downtown internet and cell coverage.
City representatives Elaine McNamara and Brad Iberg told the Board the plan uses the twelve poles surrounding the Courthouse and will include an antenna on the roof, with service supported by the courthouse basement fiber lines. Chairman Chris Timmermann said the project "seemed to be a good thing and shouldn't cost the County anything." Brad Iberg noted the city could not "guarantee exact coverage in the surrounding buildings" but said service would be better than current conditions and that the city would need to "figure out the best way to make user access easily available, but in a way so not to be abused." The Board approved the agreement by roll call vote, 4 ayes, 0 nays.
The county clerk, Meg Sybert, said improved coverage could benefit county offices that currently lack service in the Courthouse. The agreement directs the City of Greenville to finalize technical and access details; the Board did not attach financial obligations to the county in the motion.
