Resident Valerie Martin, who said she lives directly above the boathouse, urged the council to deny the request because many neighbors are older and go to bed early. "We are a 55 and over community... my fear is that if this gets approved, that it may set a precedent for future approvals at the boathouse," she said, asking the council to consider neighborhood impact (Valerie Martin, 37 Sloop Lane).
The applicant (introduced to the council as Shelley Stubbs) said the wedding would include a string quartet followed by a DJ using the boathouse's internal sound system on an enclosed patio and asked for the advertised 11 p.m. end time. Councilors discussed whether the notice mailed to nearby residents matched the application; staff confirmed notices to some residents had listed 9–11 p.m. After discussion the council voted to approve the variance as advertised and encouraged communication with the boathouse operator to limit late-booking where possible.
