Board rejects motion to cancel long-time labor-attorney retainer after officials defend service

A motion by Chairman Matthews to cancel the county's retainer agreement with attorney Nick Cetwinski, effective Nov. 30, 2024, failed at the Nov. 21 meeting after several officials voiced support for keeping him. Carter placed the item on the agenda and argued for exploring other options and local alternatives, but most board members opposed the motion.
State's Attorney Markwell told the board that Cetwinski has been the county's labor attorney for about 40 years and "has done an excellent job," and Sheriff Walker said he relied on Cetwinski and would expect continuity. The motion recorded Aye: Carter; Nay: Farris, Ferguson, Matthews, Myers, Prestegaard, Riddle, Ryan, Tilley, Werts, Witte, Deerwester. With that vote the retainer remained in place.
