Mayor Mary McCarthy presented the city’s proposed FY2027 budget Monday evening and described a multi-department package she will send to the council for review. "The FY 2027 budget has a net increase of $21,455,607, which is a net increase of 5.7%," Mayor Mary McCarthy said as she summarized the mayor's recommendations and thanked the city auditor and assistant city auditor for their work.
McCarthy told the council the department request totaled $417,885,018 and said the mayor's recommended package (as stated in the record) will be available electronically and in printed book form. She highlighted the largest upward pressures on spending: rising medical insurance costs, increases for public education, costs tied to PERAC requirements for pensions, collective bargaining adjustments and assessments from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority for water and sewer service. McCarthy detailed an $8.9 million increase for medical insurance and cited roughly $5 million for public education as among the major components of the change.
The mayor said she would be available to explain individual program budgets when the council calls her and that all 30 program budgets and related materials have been provided to the council and will be posted on the auditor’s web page. The presentation concluded with the mayor indicating that the council will refer the budgets to committee for hearings and review.
