Plano ISD board approves new K–12 math instructional materials for 2026–27

Plano ISD trustees voted unanimously April 7 to adopt the district’s recommended K–12 math instructional materials for the 2026–27 school year after a presentation on the state’s updated instructional‑materials review process.
Kristen Hebert, executive director for secondary academic services, and Dr. Ashley Davis, executive director for elementary academic services, told the board the district’s review teams used the state IMRA indicators and a locally adapted rubric, required evidence for each indicator and included teachers, coaches, principals and district staff in the evaluation process. “This work represents a thoughtful and comprehensive effort for our math resources,” Hebert said. The presenters said every recommended resource is on the state’s high‑quality instructional materials list, which makes them eligible for additional funding entitlements beyond the district’s standard instructional materials allotment.
Trustees asked about public feedback and funding implications. Dr. Ashley Davis said district leaders posted sample materials for parents to review and received a modest number of responses, most of which expressed opposition to materials the speaker described as “the curriculum that the state is pushing.” Davis said teams prioritized teacher support, vertical coherence, embedded formative assessments, differentiation and family supports in selecting resources. “Teacher guidance was very heavy in our selection process,” she said.
Board Secretary Tara Lance moved approval of the recommendation; Trustee Lisa Klein seconded. President Lauren Tyra called for a vote and the motion passed unanimously with seven hands raised. After the vote the administration said summer curriculum-writing teams will align the chosen resources to the district calendar and assessment schedule and that professional learning for teachers will begin before the 2026–27 school year.
The district emphasized this adoption follows the state’s ongoing IMRA approval process and noted the H-CIM list does not extend beyond Algebra 2; the administration said future adoptions (for literacy, for example) will follow the same process and funding schedule.
