Whitman County plans fall RFP as final Republic Services contract year begins July 1

Whitman County staff told the committee the county has one remaining year on the current contract with Republic Services and is preparing an RFP for transport and disposal to run this fall.
"We have 1 more year starting July 1 of our contract with Republic Services," David Nails told the committee, and staff said the RFP is ready and sitting on the desk. Nails said the county wants to decide before issuing an RFP whether to extend the current contract or resolicit because it is unfair to ask vendors to prepare proposals if the county then extends the existing contract.
Committee members discussed timing: a fall RFP would allow a new contract to be in place by early 2027. Staff noted there is a provision in the current contract that may allow extensions; SWAC agreed it should review extension options and provide a recommendation to the commissioners or county staff.
Next steps: County staff will verify contract extension language, and SWAC will be involved in any recommendation to extend or resolicit.
