Small blue-box recycling service stalled after county roll-off truck failure, county seeks rental or replacement

Whitman County staff alerted SWAC that the county's roll-off truck used to service small blue recycling boxes in seven towns is out of service after an engine failure.
"William County blew an engine in their roll off truck, and we are unable to provide service for the small blue boxes that are in 7 different towns," David Nails said, and staff have contacted Empire Disposal, Republic Services, Pullman, and WSU to find a solution. A rental was available only in November/December with purchase options; county staff said they continue to search for a truck that fits the boxes' tie-down design.
Committee members discussed safety concerns about chaining containers for transport if tie-downs do not align and the time required to secure containers. Ron Redmond and others said they would check whether their organizations could provide temporary roll-off capacity; Steven Gimple said Ecology is also checking for available trucks in the Seattle area.
County staff asked that members notify them if they have a roll-off truck to borrow; the county emphasized the service interruption is temporary while staff looks for a rental or alternative provider. The committee also discussed that the operational cost of a dedicated truck (roughly $400,000 new) makes long-term replacement challenging.
