Board approves temporary lease of 10 acres near South Hill for continued farming

The Board approved a resolution to lease approximately 10 acres of county-owned farmland near Theater Road and U.S. 58 in South Hill for agricultural use until such time as the County needs the land for economic development. County Administrator Alex Gottschalk explained the site has been farmed for decades and that leasing the acreage would keep it maintained and produce modest revenue for the County.
Supervisor Claudia Lundy asked whether the property should be offered by sealed bid and raised conflict-of-interest concerns about allowing the previous farmer to continue leasing. Gottschalk said there is no legal requirement to solicit sealed bids for the lease and that the Board could consider the operator’s farming history when making a decision. The Board voted unanimously to authorize the lease and delegated signature authority for execution to the Board Chair, Vice Chair, or County Administrator.
