Board approves Whittles Mill 199-foot communications tower in Election District 6

The Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors on March 9 unanimously approved a Special Exception Permit for a new telecommunications tower at 3918 Skyline Road in Election District 6. Anthony Bologna of Williams Mullen presented the application, describing a 195-foot monopole with a 4-foot lightning rod (total 199 feet) and stating that visibility simulations showed "limited visibility from surrounding areas." The Planning Commission had recommended approval following a unanimous 2232 review.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing. On a motion by Sterling Wilkinson the Board adopted the permit with the Planning Commission’s recommendations, stating the project "will not be detrimental to public welfare," will not harm neighborhood health or safety, and should improve cell service and internet connectivity in the area. The vote was recorded as unanimous with Supervisors James Jennings, Andy Hargrove, Claudia Lundy, David Brankley, Sterling Wilkinson, Tom Tanner, Brenda Blackwell, Kirk Gravitt, and Dennis Spence voting 'aye'.
