Traverse County requests variance to keep 10 mph design on County Road 42 in county park

Traverse County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution requesting a variance from State Park Road Account minimum geometric design standards for Project No. SAP 078-600-002, covering about 0.524 miles of County Road 42 within Traverse County Park on Lake Traverse.
The resolution notes that "realigning the road to a 30-mph horizontal design would require eliminating the amenities of two bathrooms and 8 electrical camper sites; extensive tree removal; limits access to RV Dumping station and registration station; and utility conflicts." The board concluded that preserving existing amenities and operations justified requesting a variance to allow the roadway to remain at its 10 mph design speed; the motion passed unanimously (mover: Chad Metz; second: Dwight Nelson).
The adopted resolution also contains indemnification language: Traverse County agrees to save and hold harmless the State of Minnesota and its agents from claims arising out of the project, and to defend at the county’s expense any action related to granting the variance. County staff will proceed with filing the variance request with the appropriate State Park Road Account authorities.
