Traverse County announced a vacancy in the Board of Commissioners after Commissioner-elect Scott Schultz declined to take office for personal reasons. County Auditor/Treasurer Kit Johnson told the board that state rules require a special election: if two or fewer candidates file, the seat can be filled in the May general election; if three or more file, a May primary and an August general election are required.
Johnson told commissioners they may not appoint a replacement under these circumstances and said he will bring a resolution to the next meeting formally declaring the vacancy and the election dates. The board approved the meeting agenda and minutes at the start of the session; motions on those items were recorded as unanimous.
