Traverse County commissioners table 2025 budget certification until Dec. 17

The Traverse County Commission on Dec. 4, 2024 voted unanimously to table certification of the 2025 budget until Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024. The motion to table was made by Commissioner Chad Metz and seconded by Commissioner Dwight Nelson; the board approved the motion 4-0.
Auditor/Treasurer Kit Johnson had handed out the proposed 2025 budget summary and explained how levy figures had changed since the board's preliminary decision. Johnson told commissioners the board had previously set a preliminary levy reflecting a 9.39% increase over 2024 and that “the levy increase is 6.82% over 2024” as of the meeting. Commissioners and members of the public asked questions about the numbers during the discussion.
Vice Chair Jerrel Olson called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and the board completed the procedural approval of the agenda before hearing the budget presentation. The commission noted that state timelines require the levy to be set by Dec. 30, 2024; tabling certification gives staff and commissioners additional time to review figures and public input before final action.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:51 p.m. County Coordinator Lisa Zahl attested the record alongside Vice Chair Jerrel Olson.
