State Forestry asks Sheridan County to propose additional fuel-mitigation projects for unused grant funds

County staff reported that a capital grant from the State Forestry Department authorized $267,000 for fuel mitigation on adjacent lands; the project that closed out used about $80,000. The State Forestry advised the county not to close out the grant yet and to identify additional projects so the unused funds can be expended rather than returned.
Staff said they are working with the State Forestry and local contacts (Chris Thomas was mentioned) to develop candidate projects in the Story/Redgrave area and would return to the commission with an amendment request if the forestry office and county agree on next steps; the original grant remains open through May 15, 2028.
