Residents urge caution on proposed water projects and sanitation costs

During the public-comment portion of the Amelia County meeting, residents raised fiscal and infrastructure concerns about water and sanitation projects included in the board packet.
Martin Konkle (16211 Church Street) questioned a packet line item describing a new well estimated at $300,000 and another capacity project with an $800,000 price tag, stressing that the county’s water system is reportedly operating at roughly 50% capacity and asking whether an ultraviolet (UV) sanitation system previously considered might remove the need for a new well: "That's a $300,000 well." Konkle asked the board to reconsider whether to proceed with the proposed well and to evaluate larger-system options before committing funds.
Bobby Lipe (1600 Richmond Road) said the county has effectively continued to underwrite sanitation-district upgrades beyond the bond that voters originally approved and suggested forming a sanitation board or reorganizing responsibilities so that the sanitation district—not the broader county taxpayer base—bears long-term maintenance and upgrade costs.
