Officials stress safety for pedestrians, bicyclists as trail comes to busy intersection

A city staff member warned the project will increase pedestrian traffic at an intersection that currently sees few walkers or cyclists and said proactive safety measures are essential. "We're fundamentally changing the nature of the intersection by increasing the pedestrian traffic at an intersection that doesn't see a whole lot of pedestrian traffic," the staff member said.
The speaker stressed that encouraging use of the new trail connections depends on safe crossings for "vulnerable users, pedestrians, bicyclists, moms with strollers, little kids on your training wheels," and added, "If it's not safe, no one's gonna use them." Officials said design decisions will prioritize safety to support trail use.
