Representative Alexander said HB 24-75 and its amendment would require all public charter and private schools to check new hires against the Department of Children's Services (DCS) substantiation database, extending the check to programs such as Head Start and Boys & Girls Club. "This bill will protect our students," the sponsor said, adding the measure was requested after an incident in Chattanooga.
Committee members expressed support; Chairman White called it a "good bill." The amendment was adopted and the bill passed the subcommittee (4 ayes, no nays) and is scheduled for full Education. The sponsor and committee did not offer a fiscal note in this hearing; implementation will require coordination with DCS and the Department of Education.
