Subcommittee advances bill broadening pathways to hire school librarians

Representative Martin (speaker 2) told the committee HB 24233 is intended to help schools recruit librarians by expanding eligibility for the library information specialist endorsement and allowing small schools more hiring flexibility.
"Currently an applicant must be a certified library information specialist to be eligible for employment. This bill explains expands eligibility in 2 ways ... it qualifies an advanced degree in media and technology to lead to a library information specialist endorsement ... and it provides the option for schools with less than 750 enrolled students to employ someone with a valid teaching license as a school librarian," the sponsor said. The State Board of Education and Department of Education would determine applicable degrees.
Committee members raised no questions; the clerk announced six ayes, no nays, and the bill was sent to full Education.
