Panel to recommend safe school design guidelines added to HB 2275; bill moves to full committee

The House Education Subcommittee voted to add amendment 014909 to HB 2275, creating a Safe School Design Advisory Board to recommend safe-school design guidelines to the commissioner of safety, the sponsor said.
“So what this amendment will do, it will create a safe school design advisory board to recommend to the commissioner of safety … safe school design guidelines for our LEAs and public charter schools to consider when constructing or remodeling kindergarten through grade 12 public school facilities,” Chair Lady Moody explained. She said the board would include experts and focus on safety considerations that evolve as technology and threats change.
Committee members voiced support, noting the distinction between fire-safety work that has evolved over decades and newer school-security concerns. The clerk announced the committee’s vote as six ayes, no nays, and the chair declared HB 2275 moves on to full Education. The amendment attaches the board administratively to the Department of Safety and specifies the commissioner may call the first meeting.
