Subcommittee backs bill to record bullying convictions in school employee files
Summary
The Education Administration subcommittee adopted an amendment and voted to send HB 17-33 to the full Education Committee. The bill would require that convictions for bullying by any school employee be recorded permanently in the Tennessee Code Annotated and follow the employee to future school systems.
Chairlady Moody, the bill sponsor, told the committee that HB 17-33 would amend Tennessee law to ensure school employees convicted of bullying are treated the same as licensed teachers on recordkeeping and hiring background checks. "It will add to the current TCA code to allow all school employees who have been convicted, keyword convicted of bullying to be treated the same as when a licensed teacher has been convicted," the sponsor said, describing the measure and an amendment the subcommittee adopted.
Committee members asked no further questions and the clerk announced the vote. The subcommittee recorded four ayes and no nays and moved the amended bill to the full Education Committee for further consideration. No outside witnesses spoke on the measure during this hearing.
