Avon task force plans follow-up forum to explain 8-30g, invite Beacon Communities

The Affordable Housing Task Force of the Town of Avon agreed on April 10 to plan a follow-up public forum that would focus on explaining the state’s 8-30g housing statute and present local project examples to get public feedback. Chair Christine Graesser said, "There seems to be interest for another forum - maybe more focus should be given to explaining the details of 8-30g."
Task Force members said the first forum drew a strong turnout but could have been improved with clearer structure. Peter Mahoney said generally the forum "went well and there was a good turnout," while Randall Bowers added participants included advocates, industry workers and residents with concerns, and that more time and a structured agenda would help. Mardelle Pena proposed using audio/visual tools and defining the forum’s purpose in advance so attendees leave with a clearer understanding of the issues.
Hiram Peck, Director of Planning and Community Development, said he expects Beacon Communities would be willing to participate and recommended an agenda that first explains basic affordable-housing concepts and then presents possible project types for community feedback. The Task Force asked members to email Graesser with suggestions; she will compile comments and work on locations and a timed agenda for a follow-up session.
