Council approves special-use permit for Exurban Curling facility
Summary
The council unanimously approved a special-use permit allowing Exurban Curling to convert an existing warehouse into a dedicated curling facility, with proponents saying the move would expand youth, senior and adaptive programs and host regional competitions.
Brian Akert (Exurban Curling) and club volunteers described plans to retrofit an existing warehouse at 7405 Irvington Road into dedicated curling sheets, warm rooms and community space. Akert said Exurban Curling has operated in the area since 1958 and expects to grow membership and host regional events.
"Exurban Curling's actually been around in Omaha since 1958," Akert said, adding that the club expects to expand junior, senior and wheelchair curling programs. Nick Sversick (club president/ice committee chair) said dedicated ice would allow the club to double membership and potentially host college nationals.
Council members praised the project as a recreational and economic-development opportunity. Council Member Festersen and others noted the nonprofit's history and community engagement. The council approved the special-use permit 6–0.
