A child nutrition staff member told the Bibb County Regular School District board that expected changes in U.S. Department of Agriculture guidance could prompt the district to shift menus toward more whole foods and to increase local sourcing.
"They're really encouraging us to move towards more whole foods," the staff member said, adding that current state bid arrangements limit immediate changes but that the district is pursuing farm‑to‑school options, noting a local supplier provides strawberries and that fresh watermelon deliveries are planned next week. The staff member said the district "uses Josh Jones" for some produce.
On meal pricing and access, the staff member said that—as long as federal rules do not change—the district can renew its current waiver status and "should be able to keep free lunch and breakfast for the current year plus three additional years." The board did not take separate action beyond receiving the update.
Why it matters: Child nutrition policy affects daily meals for thousands of students and can change procurement and vendor choices. Any changes prompted by USDA guidance could affect menus, vendor contracts and school food budgets for future years.
