Commenter urges board to examine $27M instructional materials line after years of underspending

Nicholas Cromer used his three-minute public comment to press the board for transparency on a large instructional materials and supplies line-item that appears consistently underspent.
Cromer said the line item is currently budgeted at $33,000,000 and now proposed at $27,000,000, but historical expenditures are much lower. "If the most that we've spent is $11,000,000 last year, where the rest of that money going?" he asked, offering to share the source documents and asking the board to review the numbers.
Board members thanked him and requested copies of his figures. Member Sanchez said they would like a copy as well; no staff reconciliation or definitive response to the expenditure figures was provided during the hearing.
Why it matters: if the commenter’s figures are accurate, sizeable recurring unspent balances could represent funds available for priorities such as teacher pay or underfunded capital needs. Staff and board follow-up is needed to reconcile the public commenter’s numbers with district accounting.
