MCOs to take on workforce development tasks; Kansas adds workforce managers and planning remains ongoing

State presenters said the renewed KanCare contracts require MCOs to step up workforce development efforts and that the MCOs have proposed plans to continue advisory boards, stakeholder surveys and other activities initiated through ARPA funding.
"The MCOs are working really close together to try and continue the work that they were doing," said a Kansas representative, and several participants said workforce manager positions housed at MCOs — new as of Jan. 1 — are expected to coordinate training and provider supports.
Heather, one of the workforce managers on the call who said she works at United, praised the university team's work producing training materials and a DSW website and raised the question of who will fund and sustain those materials going forward.
Why it matters: MCO operational decisions and whether they scale training, registry platforms or technical assistance will affect how quickly states can sustain improvements identified during ARPA-funded pilot projects.
