Committee backs ban on evictions during extreme-heat days over 95°F

The Committee on Housing voted to report the Extreme Heat Eviction Protection Amendment Act of 2025 (B26-177), which would prohibit evictions on days when temperatures exceed 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Chair Robert White said the measure mirrors the District’s existing protections for extremely cold days and is designed to reduce health risks during heat waves.
White described the dangers of extreme heat—including heat stroke, dehydration and worsened respiratory conditions—and noted that unhoused populations are especially vulnerable to these risks. The committee reported the bill to the full Council with leave for staff to make technical and conforming changes; White announced the motion passed unanimously.
