The chief offered short biographical sketches for each hire, citing Kumbleitz's background in state parks lifeguarding and wildland crews, Birkenfeld's completion of the Allan Hancock Fire Academy and interest in USAR specialties, and Wright's recent promotion from reserve firefighter to SAFER firefighter after completing the Monterey Peninsula College Fire Academy. "This badge represents the trust this fire department and community has placed in your hands," Chief Berkey told the new hires during the ceremony. Board members congratulated the firefighters and noted that all three have local ties to Cambria.
