Agency official urges passage of energy affordability bill to lower utility bills

An agency official for the Office of the Governor urged the legislature to pass an energy affordability bill intended to lower electricity, gas and oil costs for Massachusetts residents and businesses, saying utilities have sought large rate increases while customers struggle to pay bills. "It's gonna take action to pass the energy affordability legislation that will lower bills and reign in utility spending," the official said.

The official said both the House and Senate passed versions of the bill and a conference committee has met to negotiate final language. She said she sent a letter to conferees asking them to include measures to speed deployment of energy, hold utilities accountable, and ensure ratepayers receive the best possible deal. Key provisions described included changing how utilities procure power so they buy at lower prices and pass savings to customers, and requiring full audits of utility costs.

The official framed passage as one of several levers — along with actions by the Department of Public Utilities — that could reduce bills. She said the administration would continue to work with conferees and members of the legislature as conference negotiations continue over the next weeks and months.
