The Middletown Springs Select Board on March 5 approved a volunteer-led plan to add three to four hydrangeas on each wing of the town building and two planters flanking the porch, with much of the material and mulch donated.
A resident who led the proposal said the group would “order 3 to, 3 to 4, 3 to 4 hydrangeas to a side to a wing” and hoped that roughly half the plants would be donated so the town’s outlay would be minimal. The resident described placement choices designed to keep plants off the drip edge of the roof and to avoid obstructing window views.
Board members discussed snow-shedding from the roof and durability of the plant choices. The board heard an estimate that hydrangeas run about $50–$60 each and that a large planter can cost $100–$120; the resident reported a likely total town cost “under 700.” The Chair moved to authorize the group to coordinate ordering with town staff and to use the town’s tax-exempt account for purchases; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
Members said volunteers would handle planting and ongoing weeding where feasible, but they asked staff to track any recurring maintenance costs that might fall to the town in future seasons. The resident also offered a crabapple tree donation for a later planting, which the board said it could consider separately.
