The superintendent presented a first reading of a revised student personal electronic-device policy that would require students to keep personal devices in lockers or backpacks and disallow carrying them on their person during the school day. "Personal electronic devices may be kept by students in locker or backpacks. They are no longer allowed to keep them on their person," Jen told the board, adding that the board would refine related discipline language in the student code of conduct.
Jen said the policy change responds to concerns raised at the high school (including lunch-time misuse and bathroom incidents) and that the board will give the unions (OSEA and CEA) an opportunity to review and suggest edits during ongoing negotiations. She said progressive discipline will be used for violations and that explicit language on the stepwise process will be included in the code of conduct presented for a second reading in July.
