Board hears update on proposed town garage as FEMA mapping review continues

The Middletown Springs Select Board on May 14 received an update on plans for a new town garage and related site work as the town awaits a FEMA Letter of Map Amendment. Isaac Gackle said the town’s engineer reported FEMA has the map adjustment under review and that recent perk tests show a septic system is feasible, leaving the town ready to proceed once mapping is resolved.
Board members discussed options for locating the garage, including continuing to pursue the town-owned West Street parcel and, alternatively, consolidating the garage, salt and transfer station closer to the town center. Concerns raised included floodplain constraints, septic availability, and manoeuvring space near the firehouse. Participants agreed to pursue site drawings with Michael Beebe to clarify feasible layouts.
“The last correspondence I had with our engineer…basically, FEMA reached back out…they are working on it,” Isaac Gackle said, describing the status of the map amendment. Presenters and board members emphasized that having the map amendment completed is a gating factor for building design, and that interim arrangements for equipment storage may be necessary when the existing garage must be vacated by year-end.
