Ely police credit proactive patrols after calm Fourth of July weekend

Ely Police Captain Todd Fincher told the City Council that proactive patrols helped keep the city safe over the Fourth of July weekend. "Over the 4th of July weekend overall it was a success fire-wise and law enforcement-wise and part of that was from getting out in front of it and being proactive and preventative," Fincher said. He reported "180 incidents," of which "110 calls for service and out of those 110, 80 of those were officer-initiated," adding there were "29 traffic stops; 6 citations issued; and 7 arrests over the weekend," including four DUI arrests, one classified as a felony and one juvenile alcohol incident. He also described a short felony vehicle pursuit that ended with the vehicle recovered and the suspect apprehended.
Fincher's report, delivered during the council's departmental updates, framed the weekend as busy but controlled. The captain noted a relatively low number of fireworks calls—three—compared with expectations and said staffing was adjusted for peak hours. Council members did not take action on the report beyond hearing it; the briefing was informational and aimed at outlining public-safety operations and resource use during a holiday period.
