Board reviews AP and math results; staff plans targeted exam studies

Trustee Marisol Mellon asked why AP Seminar scores skewed differently from AP Literature and AP Language, noting last year's AP Seminar had many threes and no fives, while other exams had higher counts of fours and fives. She cited specific counts for AP Seminar this year: "41 threes, 12 fours, 6 fives," and asked what the district could do to help students achieve more fours and fives.
Curriculum staff presented a five-year look-back on AP performance and emphasized practice, exposure to prior exams and teacher collaboration as levers for improvement. Staff said teachers attend AP training and use AP Central resources; they will investigate whether the 2026 exam iteration presented unusual stimuli that affected scores.
On math, trustees expressed concern about declining scores and the absence of a dedicated math director. The director of STEM will conduct an itemized, standards-aligned exam study for Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2, use section-performance reports, and identify targeted measures and supports to be reported back to the board.
