Monterey County WIC schedules 19th annual Breastfeeding Walk and Fair for Aug. 4

Monterey County’s WIC program announced its 19th annual World Breastfeeding Week walk and health fair will be held Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the walk starting at noon at the county WIC office (632 East Alister Street). The event will include a raffle, a farmer’s market, free meals from a local food bank and a complimentary T‑shirt for walkers.
"World Breastfeeding Week is a global campaign that promotes benefits of breastfeeding, the importance of education, advocacy, and support," said Jasmine Medina, a certified lactation counselor with the county WIC program. Medina reviewed pediatric recommendations supporting exclusive breastfeeding for about six months and continued breastfeeding thereafter while introducing complementary foods.
WIC staff said local breastfeeding rates compare favorably with the state average and that the program focuses on outreach to agricultural working mothers who face workplace barriers to pumping and breastfeeding. Staff encouraged families to use WIC education and referral services; the county noted the WIC program serves prenatal clients, infants and children up to age 5, and provides food‑benefit cards along with education and appointments.
