Council hears lengthy infrastructure update as sinkhole prompts need for full pipe replacement

Engineer Erik Biermann and Public Works Supervisor James Farro told the council July 14 that a sinkhole on West Wilson Avenue opened during heavy rains due to partial pipe collapse. Biermann advised a full replacement of the damaged pipe and follow-up repairs to stormwater drains; he said previous attempts to obtain grant funding for the repairs have been unsuccessful and estimated the repair timeline could be several months.
Biermann also reported that test wells are being installed on Kresswold Lane and Chestnut Drive as part of the ongoing environmental investigation of the former Christiana site on East Avenue. Separately, he updated council that Bertha Avenue and Guernsey Place have been paved (with some remaining concrete work and cleanup) and that Rose Drive and Borton Drive Phase II plans were submitted to NJDOT for approval. Public Works Supervisor James Farro said the department's backhoe is out of order and a repair quote is being obtained; he also said contractor work on the Public Works parking lot is on hold to allow settlement of backfilled areas after a collapsed pipe.
