Commission approves five-year jail-policies contract with corrections expert at $10,000 a year

Sheriff Kevin Potter told the Box Elder County Commission the sheriff’s office needs a legal expert to draft and standardize jail policies and procedures and asked the commission to authorize a contract to engage that specialist through the Utah Sheriffs Association.
Potter said the association's lawyer has worked in corrections frequently and the proposed engagement would span five years at $10,000 per year. “It'll be 5 years, $10,000 a year,” Potter said. Commissioners moved to approve the Box Elder County Jail policies and procedures contract (Contract 25-11); the motion was seconded and carried.
Sheriff Potter said using the association's lawyer would provide a vetted legal expert to write policies the department and county can follow; the contract was presented as a best-practice step to ensure compliance with law and standards.
