The board adopted a standalone anti-bullying policy (BPS 131.2/AR 5131.2) provided by the California School Boards Association. The superintendent said the new policy expands definitions to address physical, emotional, social and cyberbullying, and adds staff development, reporting mechanisms and corrective actions for sites.
Trustees asked how new policies are communicated to staff; the superintendent said they are disseminated through staff meetings, professional development and updates to handbooks and site safety plans. The board also approved updates to AR 5131.6 (alcohol and other drugs) that add prevention programs, referrals and monitoring, and took a first read of a new student-wellness policy (BP 5030) outlining nutrition and physical-activity goals and requiring a wellness council.
Trustees recommended subcommittee review for implementation detail; the management and policy subcommittee recommended approval for the bullying and alcohol/drugs policies. No budget or vendor specifics were discussed as part of these policy adoptions.
