The board approved a three-year contract for a districtwide voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone system at a three-year cost of $52,000. Administration said the district’s legacy telephone circuits are at capacity and the VoIP system will be more scalable, tie paging systems into the IP network, and include failover options (POTS/SIP lines and UPS backups) to preserve emergency calling if Internet or power fails.
An assistant superintendent explained redundancy plans: "...there will be 2 POTS lines...we have a UPS available that will maintain for maybe about 10 minutes...and there will be SIP lines...24 channels..." Trustees asked whether the system was budgeted and whether cost overruns had occurred; administration said the contract will be paid through a split of general-fund and E-rate funds and that the projects reported no significant overruns.
The motion passed on the record. The assistant superintendent reported the system will be funded partly by E-rate (federal school connectivity funds) and by general fund allocations.
