The committee discussed recent progress on addressing asbestos at the city's 1500 building. Chair said the city adopted Ordinance 7-20-26 with an emergency clause to authorize vendor RWB (or its subcontractor) to remove asbestos from the building, and that the work will be funded through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant dollars rather than the general fund.
"The best thing about this ordinance is we're using ARPA funds. So it's coming from grant money, it's not coming from our general fund, which are tax dollars," the Chair said. Committee members said RWB has been contacted and the city is waiting for RWB to schedule the work; the committee emphasized that asbestos removal must occur regardless of future decisions about the building's fate.
Members did not record a formal vote at the committee level because the ordinance had already been passed with the emergency clause; staff will report scheduling and next steps back to council when RWB confirms calendar availability.
