Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District Superintendent reported that the U.S. Department of Education has notified districts that the mental-health demonstration grant cycle will end on Dec. 31, 2025. The superintendent said the district submitted an appeal that the department rejected and that the district joined a nationwide injunction in federal court seeking to halt the cancellations.
"We submitted our appeal in time. However, there were no timelines provided by Department of Education... We then heard of a possible action in federal courts in the form of an injunction," the superintendent said, and added that the next court date is set for October 7. The superintendent told the board the district is cautiously optimistic but provided no assurance of the outcome.
Trustees discussed the grant's importance in relation to ongoing services; the superintendent noted that although the department rejected the district's administrative appeal, participation in the federal injunction preserves the district's ability to seek continued funding through the courts. No dollar total for the specific grant funding was stated in the discussion on the record.
The district said it will update trustees following the October court hearing.
